The development of a 12.28 km railway embankment between Berčiūnai and Joniškėlis has advanced significantly with the awarding of a €104.88 million construction contract to HISK, a Lithuanian engineering and construction company, by LTG Kompetencijų centras UAB, the Lithuanian railway competence and procurement centre.
One of the most important sections of the Rail Baltica line, which will link the Baltic States with the European high-speed rail network, is the Kaunas-Panevėžys-Latvia border railway section, which includes the works. Officially, the contract was finalised on October 15, 2025.

New railway embankments, bridges, road crossings, and land reclamation projects are all part of the awarded contract, which spans 12.28 km between kilometres 102.43 and 114.71 of the planned route.
The project consists of:

The project is funded by the EU's premier transport infrastructure programme, the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) 2021-2027.
